Player Guidelines
To allow us all to enjoy roleplaying in Viking Roads,
please observe these simple "Ten Commandments". New players are afforded
considerable leeway, however, we ask that all players make an attempt at
following the guides to play to keep things fair and fun for everyone. Feel free
to contact a LM *Lore Master* or Archmage *Administrator* if you have a question
regarding a rule.
3. Thou shalt
allow remember the role of thy Lore Master and allow thy LM to moderate. The LM is responsible for creating the town or city in
which you live and for resolving your actions. Let LMs do their job! Don't post
a description of a place or location without a LMs permission. It may be
possible for you to build a hovel, a workshop or even a castle, but be sure you
have the permission of your local LM to do so! Don't post anything that assumes
the outcome of your actions, or that decides important details concerning
Non-Player Characters. This may include your attempt to get into a gate before
it closes, or the results of a sword fight with another player. Tell the LM what
you are doing and let the LM decide how successful you are.
2. Thou shalt remember to keep In
Character (what your PC does) and Out Of Character life (what you do) separate!
This is a game, which may sound obvious,
but people tend to get carried away, and sour OOC relations over an entirely IC
issue. Similarly, real-life (OOC) friends might rely on this friendship to do
things IC, which can give characters unfair advantages. We ask you to keep what
happens in the game separate from things that happen outside of the game. The
scheming viking who despoiled your god-given lands, and subsequently kidnapped
half your family is role-playing. The player whose character did it is probably
playing the game like you are and having fun. Your character no doubt wants
revenge. Go and seek it. That is also role-playing. Do not resort to out of
character curses, or taunts. By the same token, if you are the one despoiling
another character's land and kidnapping half his family, do not taunt from an
out of character perspective. On this note, remember that whatever goes on IC
regarding religions and cultures, does mention real religions and cultures which
still exist OOC. Your PC can ( and in many cases – should) be a racist and a
bigot, who condones looting and rape as a way of life. We do not and will not
tolerate any real-world OOC views along these lines. At the end of the day we
are all in this to have fun. Do not take it personally or let it get personal.
1. Thou shalt remember to have fun while thou doest play!
We are all here to have fun living in the world of
the 9th century as the people of the time imagined it to be. Be sure you get
your share! Please remember to respect others, cooperate with your local LM and
try and make it fun for everyone.
4. Thou shalt
write in the third person, either past or present tense. Also, remember the individual posts should combine to form a story (or
stories); try to make your post fit in with the relevant others, and above all
make it fun and interesting to read. No-one is about to grade your posts for
spelling, grammer, or creative writing, but this is a written game: try to focus
is on writing well! Always remember the end-result should make good reading.
5. Players are
allowed to post on up to three boards. In order for
this to work properly, you need to notify the Lore Master of your first board of
the three boards you wish to play on and the order in which they occur. Please
note that training can only occur on your first board and posessions will be
listed according to where you bought them...so if you attempt to use a sword on
board 1 that you purchased in board 3, the LM is liable to call you for
cheating!
6. Thou shalt post
as regularly as you are able. Try not to hold up
threads, and if your playing time is limited, don’t get involved in more threads
than you have time to follow and post on! If you’re going to be away from the
boards for an extended time, try to notify your LMs so they can act
accordingly. Any player account that fails to have activity for more than
30 days will be deleted and players returning after 30 days are asked to start a
new character unless prior arrangements have been made with an Archmage to keep
you account active.
7. Thou shalt keep
thy language and the actions of thy character appropriate. This game has a wide player audience ranging from teens to older adults,
and draws people from different countries. Sensibilities will vary. With this in
mind, we ask all players to follow theses guidelines. Descriptions of a sexual
nature, graphic violence and adult language are not appropriate. Innuendo, vague
references, and a discreet fade-outs are all acceptable alternatives.
8. Thou shalt
remember to be understanding. The disjointed
communication forced by forum-based games sometimes accentuates emotions and
misunderstandings. Don’t be quick to anger. If another player or LM has you
upset, take some time to cool off and then take some time to work it out via ICQ
or email. Don’t let a failure of communication spoil everyone’s fun. Be helpful.
If another player asks you for help, think before you refuse. Don't offer advice
unless you are asked.
9. Thou
shall remember to keep thy characters seperate. You
are not allowed to have your characters interacting together in the same thread
without prior LM approval. If actions outside of your control bring two or more
of your characters together, notify the local LM who will help you separate your
character’s actions from one another. If possible, try to keep each player in
separate locations and when two or more of your characters are in the same
location, notify the local LM.
10. Thou shalt
remember that LM moderation is final. Don’t
take every adverse ruling personally. In particular, a LM may rule that your
character is severely hurt, or possibly DEAD. As detailed under Cultures, death
was often the crowning glory of a heroic career. It might also be the outcome of
being foolhardy, or plain foolish. If you dislike the outcomes of your actions,
you are probably more to blame than your LM is. Arguing, name calling and
questioning LM’s on the boards is not tolerated. If you have a question, please
contact your local LM via email.
In all things remember rule #1...HAVE
FUN!!!
